Marine reserve - Shamieh

The Municipality of Jbeil, in collaboration with the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), the EU-funded MedPAN project, the Ecosystem Department at the Ministry of Environment, and the IUCN-Med, has initiated preparations to declare the "Shamieh beach" in Jbeil as a marine protected area.

This initiative aims to preserve Jbeil's marine biodiversity while providing designated areas for swimming, fishing, and diving. Shamieh beach was specifically chosen due to its distance from private properties, thus avoiding potential financial losses for nearby tourism establishments.

In mid-December 2019, the Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the Municipality of Jbeil-Byblos and the IUCN, organized a workshop at the Jbeil Municipal Cultural Center to discuss the proposed marine protected area at Shamieh beach. The workshop focused on the benefits of marine protected areas and the importance of effective management.
